Es erstaunt auf den ersten Blick, dass trotz dieser intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit dem Medea-Mythos erst spät, 1813, eine italienische Oper seria mit Medea als Hauptfigur entstand. In dieser Arbeit soll gezeigt werden, dass die metastasianische Oper weder in ihrer sozialen Funktion, noch in ihrer Ästhetik der Künstlichkeit, noch in ihrer starren Form geeignet war, das widersprüchliche, irrationale Wesen der Medea zu vermitteln. Schlaglichtartig werden Entwicklungen der italienischen Oper im ausklingenden 18. Jahrhunderts aufgezeigt, die schließlich Simon Mayr die Mittel in die Hand gaben, die zerrissene Gefühlswelt der Medea musikalisch überzeugend umzusetzen und einem, am Vorabend der Epoche der Romantik ebenfalls gewandelten, Publikum nahe zu bringen.
