Raubkunst oder Beutekunst: Nicht anders kann man den Vorgang nennen, der sich in den u.a. Listen niederschlägt. Nach dem Frieden von Lunéville 1801 reist der Abbé Jean-Baptiste Maugérard OSB (1735-1815) im August des folgenden Jahres - als Commissaire du Gouvernement pour la recherche des sciences et arts dans le quatre départements du Rhin - durch die Bibliotheken des linken Rheinufers mit dem Auftrag, diplômes, chartes, bulles, manuscrits, éditions primes etc. für Paris zu sammeln. Und so bedient er sich ungeniert an den zum Teil wertvollen alten Beständen der Museen, Archive und Bibliotheken zwischen Aachen/Köln/Trier, z. B. des Klosters Maria Laach, und verschleppt sie in die Zentrale nach Paris, das ja für die vier neuen Departements die neue Hauptstadt ist. Immerhin stellt Maugérard ordentliche Listen zusammen, die nunmehr eine Zuordnung erlauben.
