Wir kennen heute in Europa rund 1000 Fliegenarten und, sage und schreibe, 12 500 Wespenarten, die sich im Körper anderer Gliederfüßer, vor allem Insekten, entwickeln und diese dabei töten. Damit hat mehr als ein Viertel der 50 000 europäischen Insektenarten den Parasitismus bei anderen Gliederfüßern zu ihrer Lebensform gewählt. Das ist ein verblüffend hoher Anteil, dessen ökologische und wirtschaftliche Bedeutung entsprechend groß ist. Die Schlupfwespen und -fliegen werden von den Land- und Fortwirten, Gärtnern und Winzern als „heimliche Helfer" im Kampf gegen die schädlichen Insekten hoch geschätzt. In jüngerer Zeit wurde auch damit begonnen, sie aus ihrer Heimlichkeit hervorzuholen und gezielt zur biologischen Schädlingsbekämpfung einzusetzen.
