Unternehmen betreiben nicht nur intern Forschung und Entwicklung, sondern greifen auch auf sämtliche Wissensquellen außerhalb des eigenen Unternehmens. Sie haben erkannt, dass man durch das Einbeziehen von Kunden und Lieferanten und Integration externer Forschungs- -und Entwicklungseinrichtungen in den Entwicklungsprozess, das unternehmerische Innovationspotenzial vergrößert.Die Gründe für Open Innovation sind kürzere Innovationszyklen, erfolgreiche und an Kunden ausgerichtete Innovationen und die Reduzierung der Kosten. Aufgrund steigenden Wettbewerbsdrucks in einen komplexen und globalen Markt nutzen viele Unternehmen Open Innovation und nutzen dabei möglichst alle Wissensquellen. Open Innovation ist eine neue Perspektive, um Probleme wie steigende Kosten oder kürzere Produktlebenszyklus zu meistern.
