Die vorliegende Arbeit nimmt das Phänomen zum Anlass, um unter dem Begriff der Maske grundlegende Fragen zur Konstruktion von Identität und Weiblichkeit zu stellen.Die Untersuchung nähert sich der Maskerade zunächst über eine Beschreibung des Female Masking und verortet die Maskerade im Anschluss daran im historischen und psychoanalytischen Kontext, um schließlich ihre vielseitigen Implikationen innerhalb der Gendertheorie zu skizzieren.Am Ende dieser Untersuchung steht eine Auseinandersetzung, die mit Michel Foucault das Verhältnis des Female Masking zum Utopischen aufdeckt.
