Ungefähr seit der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts scheinen in der Musik die Grenzen zwischen U und E durchlässiger als zuvor. Kontaktaufnahmen, Osmosen, neuartige Beziehungen zwischen den musikalischen Kulturen sind zu beobachten, die in beide Richtungen verlaufen. Inwiefern sie als Aushandlungen der Grenzen, Austausch über sie hinweg oder als Angleichung begriffen werden können, wird in dem Band in exemplarischen Beiträgen untersucht. Zu den behandelten Themen gehören Popmusik und Kunstreligion, Musik von Leonard Bernstein, John Cage, Joni Mitchell, Astor Piazzolla, Sonic Youth und Iannis Xenakis, klassische Musik im Pop, die Synthese von U und E in Soundtracks sowie vergleichende Seitenblicke auf die Literatur und die bildende Kunst.
