Im ersten Teil wird zunächst Frankfurts Aufsatz „Über die Nützlichkeit letzter Zwecke " zusammenfassend dargestellt. Dabei werden besonders Frankfurts Kritikpunkte an der „klassischen " Aristotelischen Theorie über Mittel und Zwecke herausgearbeitet. Diese Kritikpunkte werden dann im zweiten Teil der Arbeit überprüft, indem anhand ausgewählter Textbelege Aristoteles' Zweck-Mittel-Relation nachgezeichnet wird. Dabei wird sich herausstellen, dass die von Frankfurt geäußerte Kritik lediglich bedingt richtig ist und stattdessen eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit zwischen den Auffassungen Frankfurts und Aristoteles besteht.
