This collection of essays marks 150 years of study and reflection since the Dominican Priory in Tallaght was founded. There, indeed, friarse together with sisters, laity, and contemplative nuns, members of the family that is the Order of Preachers, explore the gospel that unites them in prayer and preaching. The opening essays are on the text of the Bible, on the formation of the Gospels, and on the experience of exile and migration in the lives of Jesus and Paul. There are chapters on Dominican theology and spirituality, drawing on the classic writings of Aquinas, the sermons of Meister Eckhart, and the wisdom found in the 800 years of the Order's development. We read also about the art and craft of preaching. There are reflections on the difficulties and possibilities of speaking in situations of distress, alienation and affliction. Chapters are included on moral theology as explored in the Dominican tradition, on the contribution and limitations of law, and on the question of Church-State relations, particularly in Ireland. In the contemporary situation in which religion, faith, and theology are regarded with increasing suspicion, these essays are a timely reminder of the healing, civilising and ultimately saving character of the Word of God revealed in Jesus of Nazareth.
