Wenn man die Geschichte des Thüringer Königsreichs bis zu seiner Zerschlagung durch die Franken im Jahre 531 und die Geschichte der Wigmodiburg bis zu deren Umgründung in ein Kloster im Jahre 1121 betrachtet, fällt auf, dass oft Altsachsen in der Gegend des Mansfelder Landes siedelten und dort sogar noch zu Luthers Zeiten niederdeutsch gesprochen wurde. Sowohl die Bezeichnungen Friesenfeld, Hassegau und Schwabengau weisen nachdrücklich darauf hin. Mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit ist anzunehmen, dass der Name Wigmodiburg von Altsachsen, die Karl der Große im Jahre 804 in diese Gaue deportierte, mitgebracht wurde. Wie die Seeburg - ehemals Hocseoburg - nach dem Hasagowe in Altsachsen, aus der ihre Bewohner kamen, benannte man auch die Wigmodiburg nach der Heimat ihrer Neusiedler aus Wigmodien.
