In einem ersten Teil wird kurz die Geschichte und Zielsetzund der Frankfurter Schule erläutert und Marcuses Stellung darin beleuchtet. Der zweite Teil beschäftigt sich mit Marcuses Toleranzkonzeption. Dabei steht Marcuses Aufsatz Repressive Toleranz im Zentrum. Anschliessend wird gezeigt, in wie fern Marcuses Vorstelllung von Toleranz von dessen Freundrezeption abhängt. Schliesslich soll gezeigt werden, ob und wie weit Marcuses Toleranzkonzeption durch eine von ihm abweichende Freudrezeption verändert werden kann. Hierzu wird die Freudrezeption Ericht Fromms der von Marcuse gegenübergestellt.
