Or was it to appease his political backers like Kellog Brown and Root (now Haliburton) who received an inordinate amount of "No Bid" contracts to build the roads, airfields, housing, and infastructure in Vietnam?Fortunately, or unfortunately, the helicopter became an integral part of the medical evacuation process during the Vietnam War. It's speed, ability to maneuver into areas once impassible by litter jeep, litter bearers or tracked vehicles, made it a "Turbine Florence Night-In-Gale" saving over 120,000 severely wounded GI's during the ten years of combat. You'll feel the adrenalin rush when a call comes in. Someone's been shot, blown up, splattered across the paddy by a land mine or, disemboweled by a booby trap. He's depending on you to get to his side. So is someone else! His name is Charlie, given that name by the GI's who fought him. Charlie, wounded or killed that infantryman and he's waiting patiently to do the same to you, because bullets are like junk mail. They're always addressed to - - "To whom it may concern"
