1905. My grandfather Karl Jauram, the son of an Estonian peasant farmer, leaves home and travels south to Ukraine in search of work.  

1914. It begins. World War One. The Russian Revolution. The Russian Civil War. The Famine in Ukraine.

In this memoir, Karl's daughter Elsa describes life in Ukraine during this terrible time. In order to escape to the safety of Estonia, the family undertakes a daring journey across Russia in only a wagon with two horses.

1939. It begins again. World War Two. As the Soviet tanks advance on Estonia the family has to flee once more. Elsa describes their flight through war torn Europe.

1945. The war is over. The family find refuge in a camp for Displaced People. Elsa makes her way to the UK to work as a nurse. She marries again and the family move to the Scottish Highlands. Peace at last? No. Fate has one more trick up her sleeve.

This is a firsthand account of an ordinary family faced by huge challenges in a cauldron of unprecedented suffering. It is also a story of unexpected victory, thanks to the grace of God.
