Did you know that the first colleges of America were all Christian colleges that prepared their students not only for this life but for the eternal life to come? Sadly, these schools today are effectively atheistic.
How did this change happen, and was it justified? Highlighting the Christian characteristic of three sample early colleges-Harvard, Yale, and Princeton-Engleman reveals how the Kant-energized religion of science aggressively drove the old faith out of the schools in the late 1800s. The result has been a disaster, both temporally and eternally. What remains is a call for American schools to regain an eternal perspective-a perspective most excellently expressed by a great Harvard man nearly four centuries ago:
