Over the past twenty years GIS & Society research has been emerging on a variety of themes that mix and relate to one another making GIS the interesting multifaceted activity that it is. The SAGE Handbook of GIS and Society is a retrospective and prospective overview of GIS and Society research that provides an expansive and critical assessment of past, present and future theory. Emphasizing theoretical, methodological and substantive diversity within GIS and Society research, the book examines the integrity and intellectual coherence of the subject as a field of study, while examining its resonances with and between key components and other disciplines from geography and computer science to sociology and criminology. Comprising of 30 chapters of an international focus, the book is organized into seven sections: o Fundamentals of Geographic Information and Society o Spatially Integrated Social Science o Alternative Visual Representations o Organizations and Institutions o Value, Fairness and Privacy o Ethical and/or Legal Issues o Participation and Community Issues o GIS and Society Impacts Aimed at academics, researchers, practitioners and postgraduates, this Handbook will be the exploratory tool for any inquiry applying geographical information science to society research.
