The Master Potter

“If the clay makes any contribution to its end use, it is that of submissiveness—submitting to the masterful hands of the potter. This alone is what is required of the clay. The clay does not determine what it is used for or how. It is completely up to the potter to employ his skill and decide the best use for any clay. In just this way, we can trust the hands of our Master Potter.”

The Master Potter emphasizes the need for every believer to spend quality time daily in the presence of the Lord through prayer and meditation. This is necessary to discipline us to hear Him. In a meditative mood like this, the Lord spoke to the prophet Jeremiah and directed him to go to the potter’s workshop where he received a life-transforming message about the potter and the clay.

No matter what quality the clay may be, it must undergo some purifying processes before it can be used. No potter would like to work with a non-plastic clay which is not malleable. That can be a very frustrating venture. But plastic clay is alive and responsive. It can easily be manipulated by the potter to suit his creative purpose. The outcome is a masterpiece, a work of art which represents an intimate fusion of the artist’s spirit and the clay.
