The Fashionable Lover: A Comedy is a play written by Richard Cumberland in 1772. The play is set in London and follows the story of a wealthy young man named Sir John Friendly who falls in love with a beautiful and fashionable woman named Lady Brumpton. However, Lady Brumpton is already engaged to Sir John's friend, Colonel Atall, and has no interest in Sir John. Despite Lady Brumpton's rejection, Sir John continues to pursue her, even going so far as to disguise himself as a French dancing master in order to get closer to her. Along the way, there are a number of misunderstandings and mistaken identities, as well as a subplot involving a group of con artists trying to swindle Sir John out of his money.The play is a satire of the fashionable society of the time, with characters who are obsessed with their appearance and social status. It also explores themes of love, loyalty, and the dangers of deception.
