But it is a tenuous community of mismatched people, and everybody is thinking about leaving the place. Nonetheless, Martin attempts to improve the situation on the estate with his artistic and spiritual gifts; and gradually he finds a bond of empathy to the Land and the People. But then, one day, Martin gets drawn into a racial dispute, confronting him with the grim reality of the country.
