Im Zentrum der konzis und subtil aufgefächerten Analysen steht die Bedeutung Richard Wagners: Es ist das paradoxe Ereignis der "Erlösung", das von Wagner auf nicht länger metaphysische Weise vorgestellt, d. h. technisch reproduziert wird. Das Produkt ist das Ding als Kunstwerk. Dies prekäre Ding, das, zuletzt als "Bühnenweihfestspiel", wie jedes authentische moderne Kunstwerk die Bestimmung hat, zugleich Ware zu sein und sich als Ware zu negieren, ist "despotisch" auch darin, daß es in dieser Negation seinen Warencharakter gleichsam potenziert wiederherstellt, insofern es wohl vom Welt-Schmerz "erlöst", aber eben dinghaft, d. h. so vergessenmachend wie die unmittelbare Ware selbst, die sich nur den Umweg über den Schmerz erspart. Insofern ist es richtig zu sagen, daß mit dem Wagnerschen Kunstwerk die Kunstreligion der Moderne, die von Anfang an die Sucht und Suche nach der "Schönheit", dem "Sublimen" usw. war, absolut wird, und das meint hier: das Wagnerische Kunstwerk ist die sublimierte Utopie.
