Der Titel eines ZEIT-Magazins im Februar 2010 spricht Bände. Die Kommunikation via Internet ist in Deutschland zu einem Standard geworden, dessen Nutzung nicht mehr wegzudenken ist. Ob für den privaten oder geschäftlichen Bereich: Das Internet bietet durch seine Trivialität in der Anwendung sowie seine kostengünstige und zeitlich flexible Funktionalität dem Nutzer viele Vorteile für die zwischenmenschliche Kommunikation. Um diesem Grundbedürfnis einen optimalen Raum zu schaffen, bieten soziale Netzwerke als spezielle virtuelle Plattformen die Möglichkeit, „Inhalte und Informationen zwischen verbundenen Nutzern" auf einfache Weise austauschbar und zugänglich zu machen. Mögen diese virtuellen Welten auch oftmals Kritik hervorrufen, so sind sie nicht nur für unzählige Privatpersonen, sondern auch immer häufiger für Unternehmen ein wichtiger Bestandteil der eigenen Kommunikation. Doch nicht nur gewinnorientierte Institutionen haben soziale Netzwerke als Marktplatz für sich erkannt: Im Zuge der steigenden Konkurrenz für gemeinnützige Organisationen, machen auch diese den Namen zum Programm und nutzen die vernetzten Strukturen, um ihre wohltätigen Absichten publik zu machen und gezielt Spenden zu akquirieren. Diese Tatsache soll zur Basis der folgenden Arbeit werden, in der die Drittmittelbeschaffung innerhalb verschiedener sozialer Netzwerke näher betrachtet werden soll. Es gilt aufzuzeigen, auf welche unterschiedliche Art und Weisen für Spenden geworben werden kann.
