Sie behandeln nicht die Geheimnisse des Daseins, gehen aber zuweilen tief im Aufsuchen der Wurzel menschlicher Gefühle, Handlungen und Gesinnungen. Sie drehen sich nicht nur um Freundschaft und Ehe, Religion und Moral, Politik und Gelehrsamkeit, sondern auch um das Verhältnis zwischen Armen und Reichen, um Kunst und Theater, um alle Arten der Verstellung und des Irrtums. Paul Möller sagte einmal mit Recht: „Die Lektüre von Aphorismen ist keine Arbeit, sondern ein Surrogat für Gespräche." Wer unsern Autor liest, hat die Empfindung, sich mit einem feinen Geist zu unterhalten, den Menschenliebe vereint mit Menschenverachtung zum Satiriker gemacht haben.
