Er gilt Zeitgenossen als provozierend und polemisierend, ist leicht reizbar und überwirft sich mit vielen Weggefährten. Als Schriftsteller ist er erfolgreich und gut bezahlt, dennoch stets in Geldnot. Psychische Krisen, Anfälle von Paranoia und Selbstmordversuche unterbrechen immer wieder seine Schaffenskraft. Am 16. Dezember 1878 stirbt in Frankfurt am Main mit Karl Gutzkow ein bedeutender Vertreter des deutschen Frührealismus schlafend bei einem Schwelbrand.
