Als Seespeck nicht lange danach in der Gegend von Wilsede in einer Postkutsche durch die Lüneburger Heide auf Buxtehude zu fuhr, weil er am Tage darauf in Hamburg sein mußte, saß er mehrere Stunden in eines Mannes Gesellschaft, die seinen gewöhnlichen Zustand so sehr verkehrte, daß es ihm zu Mute war, als stände er ohne Halt auf einer hohen Leiter oder als faßte ihn für die ganze Zeit ein Schwindel, weil er in einen Spiegel hineinschaute, in dem sich alles bewegte, was draußen sonst ruhig lag und stand. So oft er meinte, sich so zu rücken, daß er den andern fest ins Auge fassen konnte, schien ihm der Boden unter den Füßen zu schwanken, und alles wollte sich vor seinen Blicken wie einem überkopf Stürzenden um- und umkehren. Er hatte den Tag vorher auf dem Wilseder Berge lange gezecht, und daher saß ihm in der Magengegend noch ein gelegentliches Gefühl, als gerönne etwas, als versteinte oder erstarrte etwas, worauf sich gleichzeitig ein leichter Schwindel hinter der Stirn merkbar machte. Aber damit hatte der Anblick dieses Mannes in der Ecke der Postkutsche wohl nichts zu tun, auf dessen Gesicht vom Licht der Bocklaterne ein Rückwärtsstrahl fiel. Seespeck selbst saß in der schräg gegenüberliegenden Ecke am offenen Türfenster und ließ vor diesem noch am Seitenfenster sein Profil gegen den Himmel abschatten.
