Durante la Grande Guerra sul fronte italiano, i due avversari, Italia ed Austria-Ungheria, si avvalsero spesso del supporto dei propri alleati. Nel 1918 tutte le truppe germaniche furono ritirate a scaglioni dal fronte italiane, mentre inglesi e francesi rimasero in linea, spostandosi in primavera ed estate sull’altopiano di Asiago, nella zona di Cesuna (inglesi) e di cima Echar (francesi). Nell’occasione tali truppe furono determinanti nel fronteggiare l’ultimo violento attacco austriaco del giugno 1918. In autunno parte del contingente fu spostato sul Piave (Grave di Papadopoli) concorrendo allo sfondamento decisivo conosciuto come battaglia di Vittorio Veneto.
