Description  

Fiction aimed at children in grades 3 to 5; aged 8 to 10/11. It is a mystery involving animals (a cat and a dog team) as the main characters. They talk. It involves mystery; suspense; danger; humour and some plot twists. There are some illustrations. And it does have a happy ending. The story takes place in the suburbs of Houston, Texas.

SASSI is short for Socks’ and Astrid’s Secret Service Investigations. Socks is a calico cat with attitude, and Astrid, a Labrador with a nose for finding clues. They are well known in the neighbourhood for solving mysteries.

One day a squirrel suffering from amnesia comes to ask them for help. The only clue is a feather… it’s from the feared hawk, Red. A mysterious red powder and a sticky brown substance - the clues found on the feather point to a very sinister plot to rule the world. But by whom?

Is it Red? Is he working with the mean looking creatures in the abandoned warehouse? Or is it the secretive gang of alley cats? Can CatFather and SaltyPaws be trusted? And why does the squirrel have a feather?

Putting their own lives in danger Socks and Astrid pursue clues to solve this mystery as animals all over the world are in jeopardy.

Other characters you will meet in the book include:

  • Dougal (a Scottish terrier with pince-nez glasses) the gadget's guy; he has eyes everywhere;
  • Harry (a long-legged Schnauzer) with beguiling eyes also develops antidotes and makes safety gear;
  • Caddie (a black labrador) the K9 Police Commissioner;
  • Cocoa (also a black labrador) co-ordinates rescue and evacuation operations;
  • The Fe-lion S.W.A. Team (Cat division of the Superior Working Animal Team);
  • The K9 S.W.A. Team (Dog division of the Superior Working Animal Team);
  • Red, a red-tailed hawk;
  • Alley cats – CatFather, SaltyPaws and Boris;
  • And Mutated creatures the Ninja rats (Rat Capone is their leader).

If you are a fan of mystery and ever wonder what your animals do all day then this is the book for you. Some adults may enjoy it, too, as a light hearted read.
