Sein Verhalten war manchmal schroff, manchmal liebenswürdig und immer unvorhersehbar. Er bat stets um Geld, nicht um sich zu bereichern, sondern um es wieder zu verteilen. Wie viele andere Dinge besaß es für ihn eine symbolische Bedeutung. Bekannt wurde er v.a. durch die vielen Wunder, die er in aller Selbstverständlichkeit wirkte, aber stets Gott zuschrieb. Er wurde als Guru betrachtet und verehrt. Er lehrte auf sehr praktische Weise Gottesliebe und Selbstergründung und gab Rat in weltlichen und spirituellen Angelegenheiten.
