'Retablo de aldea' (1941), de José Víctor Carreño, es una obra difícil y atípica dentro de la dramaturgia asturiana de post-guerra. Su génesis no se podría explicar sin el enciclopedismo teatral de su autor. Es un drama rural legendario, con acotaciones imposibles, y a la manera poética, que trata sobre una Asturias brutal. Aunque muchos temas eran conocidos, nunca habían sido tratados antes con tal profundidad literaria. En este retablo se reflejan amores y ambiciones imposibles, a los que ronda el robo, el crimen y el sacrilegio, que acabaran consumidos por llamas purificadoras. Texto rescatado, bien lejano de lo que el público demandaba, que acaba por imponernos su teatralidad radical e imponente. Una entrada en la dramaturgia por la puerta grande, que pudo ser... y no fue.
