Sowohl Ernst Troeltsch als auch Paul Tillich unternahmen den Versuch, im Rahmen des neuzeitlichen Paradigmenwechsels in der Geistes- und Kulturgeschichte eine Religions- und Kulturtheorie in christentumstheoretischer Verantwortung zu entwickeln. In dieser Arbeit wird gezeigt, auf welchen methodologischen Grundentscheidungen die jeweils unterschiedlichen Verhältnisbestimmungen von Religions- und Kulturtheorie beruhen und welche Funktion in den beiden Werken der Theologie und ihrem Gegenstand zukommt bzw. welche Problemstellungen sich durch das induktiv-kulturanalytische bzw. deduktiv-theologische Vorgehen jeweils dabei ergeben. Die Zusammenschau dieser beiden Entwürfe hat das Ziel, einen Beitrag zur Formulierung einer theologisch verantwortbaren Religions- und Kulturtheorie zu leisten. Ihre Aufgabe besteht darin, Kulturphänomene in ihrer Deutungsvielfalt wahrzunehmen ohne den Eigenwert der Religion und die Bedeutung ihrer Inhalte mit deren hermeneutischen Erschließungskraft für das Ganze der Kultur auszublenden.
