Fue un acierto de José Alberto Alcalde, me adelanto a consignarlo, haber escrito dos semblanzas paralelas, la de Juan Vicente y la de Eustoquio, y ello porque en el folklore hay siempre uno bueno y otro malo, enfrentados para siempre... Eustoquio y Juan Vicente eran las dos caras del dios Jano, dinosaurio bicéfalo que acampó en una tierra que con ellos pagó todos sus pecados del siglo XIX. Este proceso encuentra un intérprete afortunado en Alcalde quien maneja con maestría el lenguaje y la intuición que piden los dos personajes. Hay que felicitarlo por no haberse dejado tentar, como tantos otros, con la pedrería de la Historia y de la Sociología. Alcalde narra, sugiere, pinta y, en definitiva, pone frente a nosotros a dos caracteres como hacen los autores de los guiones cinematográficos.Domingo Alberto Rangel
