Che nelle valli dei lidi ferraresi, compresi il delta del Po e la sacca di Scardovari, vi fosse il passaggio delle anguille durante la loro migrazione, verso il mar dei Sargassi: è un fatto noto agli abitanti di quelle zone. Le valli opportunamente attrezzate e organizzate con trappole di entrata e uscita da quelle valli, erano il terreno ideale per l'allevamento e la crescita di questo strano animale che assomigliava più a una serpe che a un pesce. Quello che vuole raccontare questo racconto è la vicenda, una delle tante, che si è vissuta in quelle terre dure e ingrate, dove gli uomini scavavano la loro vita con quella determinazione che solo la miseria e la fame possono agguerrire. Che alcuni siano arrivati a uccidere, per difendere le loro nasse dove intrappolavano le anguille, in quei tempi erano un fatto abbastanza comune, ma che quelle terre fossero ancora tormentate nel ricordo di torti subiti durante l'ultima guerra, anche questo era un fatto abbastanza comune.
