Old Saint Jago is a historical novel written by George Fortunatus Judah and first published in 1896. The story is set in the 17th century and revolves around the city of Santiago de la Vega, which is now known as Spanish Town in Jamaica. The protagonist of the novel is a young Englishman named Francis Redmayne, who arrives in Jamaica with his father to claim an inheritance.Francis soon becomes enamored with the island and its people, particularly a beautiful Creole woman named Ysabel. However, their love is complicated by the fact that Ysabel is already engaged to a wealthy planter named Don Miguel. The novel explores the themes of love, race, and class in colonial Jamaica, as well as the politics of the time, including the struggle between the English and Spanish for control of the island.As Francis becomes more involved in the affairs of the island, he becomes aware of the injustices and inequalities suffered by the enslaved population.
