Národní umělec Vladislav Vančura (23. 6. 1891 - 1. 6 1942) byl český spisovatel, dramatik, filmový režisér, původním povoláním lékař. V květnu roku 1942 byl zatčen gestapem a 1. června na Kobyliské střelnici popraven.Obrazy z dějin národa českého je dílo vystavěné na historických podkladech. Nejde o souvislé vyprávění, ale o stylizované příběhy slavných osobností (Kosmas, Přemysl Otakar II....). Začíná u praotce Čecha a končí na konci 13. století. Hlavním cílem díla bylo posílení národního sebevědomí v osudových chvílích pomnichovských.Původně Vančura zamýšlel napsat celkem šest dílů, napsal jen dva. Kvůli své odbojové činnosti byl zatčen gestapem uprostřed práce a dílo tak zůstalo nedokončeno v půli věty.
