The story occurs in the backdrop of racial tensions, which affects Theodore's Colored friend, Jeremiah Johnson, who worked in the yard of the murdered man. Was he the murderer?

Tension also rises between Theodore's mother and father. Her mother is bombshell of an activist, unheard of in those days, to give "Colored" people equal rights. Her father believes the only way to bring about change is to change peoples' hearts through the spirit of God.

He is frightened that her mother's actions are endangering the very people she so fervently wants to help. Th is conflict is resolved through a startling act at the end by Theodora's father, an act that is against his moral precepts and against the law.
