Mad Mary really needs to replace her rickety old Land Rover. A new one, though, will be very expensive, so Mary decides to raise some money by taking in liveries at her smallholding. In no time there is a new occupant in one of the smallholding's two stables, a rather unfriendly mare called Susie. However, it is not Susie herself who causes Max and Tarran to feel something is not right; it's the two strange men who brought her there.
Max and Tarran take their concerns to the next Spy Club meeting, where the team decide an investigation is definitely required. However, Spy Club soon runs into unexpected complications and, surprisingly, it is shy Lucy Locket who reveals a talent that comes to their aid. However, none of the members of Spy Club have any idea of the problems and dangers which will face them, once the investigation gathers pace.
A new family arrives in Lower Barton, together with a potential new member for Spy Club, one who has some interesting information; information which proves to be relevant to their investigation and which sends Mangy Tom on a perilous journey across country; a journey requiring all his skill and courage to survive. It soon becomes frighteningly clear to Spy Club that Mad Mary's decision has not only put all the members of Spy Club in danger's path, but also Mad Mary herself.
It seems that they may be facing a very ruthless adversary, one who is quite willing to kill.
