Michel Gervais nous livre son témoignage intime, un point de vue d'enfant sur l'occupation allemande, la libération, et la France d'après-guerre. On suit ses péripéties d'étudiant en internat à Chambéry, à Lyon, et à Centrale Paris. Il nous raconte sa prépa militaire à l'école de cavalerie de Saumur et son affectation au front pendant la guerre d'Algérie. On apprend comment ce jeune français rencontre au bar du grand paquebot Ile de France, une belle américaine qui deviendra, après quelques rebondissements et la crainte de l'avoir perdue à jamais, la femme de sa vie.
