Bereits vor der 1818 gegründeten Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität gab es in Bonn eine Hochschule: die 1777 gegründete "Maxische Akademie", die 1786 in eine Universität umgewandelt wurde. Aus dieser Zeit ist das sogenannte Matrikelbuch erhalten, das Listen bis 1792 beinhaltet: Darin sind Dozenten und Studenten aufgeführt mit wichtigen Zusatzinformationen über den Wissenschaftbetrieb, über Herkunft, Sozialstatus und Gebühren der Studenten, von denen der berühmteste Ludwig van Beethoven ist, der sich am 14. Mai 1789 einschrieb.
