Pohjanmaalla ja Pohjois-Savossa oli 1800-luvun alkupuolella syntynyt pietistisiä herätyksiä. Niistä muotoutunut herännäisyys kuitenkin laantui siellä 1800-luvun puoliväliin mennessä. Tätä myöhäisemää herännäisyyttä, jota kainuulaiset nimittävät vanhaksi herännäisyydeksi eli "vanhan kansan uskoksi", tavattiin Kainuussa yhtenäisenä vielä 1900-luvullakin. Savossa ja Pohjanmaalla esiintyi taas 1800-luvun lopulla uusi herätyksiä, joiden vaikutuksesta herännäisyys uudistui. Tämäkin uusi herännäisyys levisi Kainuuseen 1890-1930-luvuilla.
