Das Vorhaben der Komiktheorie ist in den Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften in die Krise geraten. Was komisch ist, so wird hier weithin angenommen, das liegt im Auge des Betrachters und entzieht sich darum einer Bestimmung mit allgemeinem Anspruch. Die vorliegende Untersuchung tritt dieser verbreiteten Auffassung entgegen - sie wirbt für eine Rückkehr der Literaturwissenschaft zur universalistischen Tradition der Komikforschung, indem sie in zwei Schritten Möglichkeit, Gestalt, Leitkonzepte und Anwendungspotenzial einer Theorie literarischer Komik erläutert: Ihr erster Hauptteil entwirft im Anschluss an die neuere linguistische, psychologische und humanwissenschaftliche Humorforschung ein Inkongruenzkonzept des Komischen in der Literatur; ihr zweiter Hauptteil erprobt das entwickelte Modell in Auseinandersetzung mit Komödien und Komödientheorien von Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz, August von Kotzebue und Ludwig Tieck.
