Quest'opera, uscita a Bombay nel 1895 e poi riproposta nel 1907 in forma modificata sotto il titolo "The Spirit of the Upanishads or The Aphorisms of the Wise" e con la falsa attribuzione a Yogi Ramacharaka, viene ora tradotta in italiano per la prima volta nella sua forma integrale, correttamente restituita al suo vero autore, Manilāl Nabhubhāī Dvivedi, che volle, scrivendo questa "Imitazione", celebrare la figura di colui che è ritenuto il massimo maestro dell'Advaita-vedānta, Śrī Ādi Śankarācārya, restauratore della tradizione indù, fornendo una silloge di insegnamenti tratti sia dalle opere da lui direttamente scritte o commentate (molti passi sono tratti dalla "Bhagavadgītā" e dalle "Upanishad") sia da quelle scritte dai suoi immediati seguaci (Sureśvara, Vidyāranya).Dario Chioli, il curatore, ha spiegato nella Presentazione le contorte vicende editoriali del libro e delineato un profilo biobibliografico dell'autore, corredando poi il testo di note, bibliografia e glossario.
