Elle est parue pour la première fois le 25 octobre 1924 dans la revue américaine Collier's Weekly, avant d'être regroupée avec d'autres nouvelles dans le recueil Les Archives de Sherlock Holmes (The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes).Pour avoir accès à un important héritage, trois hommes portant le nom de Garrideb doivent se présenter ensemble devant le notaire. L'un des deux premiers fait appel à Sherlock Holmes pour trouver le troisième.Nouvelle faisant partie du recueil: Les Archives de Sherlock Holmes. John Garrideb informe Sherlock Holmes qu'un richissime américain du nom de Garrideb vient de mourir. Une seule condition pour hériter de sa fortune : trois autres personnes portant le même nom doivent se présenter en même temps. Ayant déjà localisé un certain Nathan Garrideb, il demande à Holmes de trouver un troisième Garrideb. Très vite, Sherlock Holmes se rend compte qu'il est peut-être manipulé.
