En Las formas del conductismo, publicado en 1928, John B. Watson (1878-1958), el padre del conductismo clásico, expone una visión clara de su enfoque, que rechaza las explicaciones mentalistas y se centra exclusivamente en la conducta observable. Watson argumenta que la psicología debe ser una ciencia objetiva centrada en las relaciones de la conducta con el ambiente. Este ambiente no es solo inmediato sino también histórico. Sin el estudio de la infancia, afirma Watson, no es posible comprender la conducta del adulto.
A lo largo de esta obra, Watson defiende que la conducta humana, desde las emociones hasta los hábitos complejos, desde la memoria al pensamiento, son el resultado de condicionamientos adquiridos mediante la interacción con el entorno. Particularmente singulares son sus valoraciones sobre la conducta instintiva, la interacción del enfoque conductista con la teoría de la evolución, la dualidad entre conducta verbalizada y no verbalizada, o el proceso de desarrollo del lenguaje privado, lenguaje laringeado o subvocal, en palabras de Watson. Su enfoque plantea aplicaciones tanto para la psicología clínica como para la educación que se explorarían a lo largo del siguiente siglo.
El libro propone el conductismo como una vía científica para entender y transformar la conducta al sugerir que esta puede ser moldeada. El siempre polémico Watson presenta su enfoque de madurez en Las formas del conductismo. La posición del conductismo watsoniano tuvo un profundo impacto en la investigación y práctica psicológica, sin él, no pueden entenderse las formulaciones conductistas de décadas posteriores o el análisis de conducta experimental y aplicado actual.
