Explore South East London in 1963; a world of nostalgia that sadly cannot be visited anymore.
On Lamlash Street, Cockney families have more character than money, living among the bombed out and condemned buildings. Post WWII London will change swiftly into the era of The Beatles, Twiggy, and modern space-age, swinging London.
Experience the lively perspective of a girl on her way to womanhood, coming of age at a moment in London's untold history unlike any other. Jill Phillips tries to secure her first kiss while navigating a world turned upside down by the trauma that her father, mother, and survivor uncle experienced during the war.
It's a time when a neighborhood factory shutting down could mean more than just job loss. As families are torn apart, they rely on questionable yet quirky neighbors and fashion inventive means of survival - like pay cigarette machines in the house and Christmas party presents "special ordered" for a fraction of the cost.
Seen-but-not-heard by the adults in her life, Jill looks for young love and struggles to define herself. Stories of Nazi war planes on the walk home from school, watching Doodle bugs (flying bombs) drop from rooftop perches, and her uncle's unsettling experiences of war service as a young merchant mariner; give her a unique lens of the world and what a better future could look like for her family.
If you like non-stereotypical women characters, working-class endurance, and memoirs about rallying from abundant loss, then you'll adore this heartfelt and funny historical true story.
