Nel 1527 la risonanza europea della conquista e del saccheggio di Roma ad opera delle milizie imperiali fu enorme. L'impatto mediatico (come si direbbe oggi) assunse le forme più disparate e percorse i canali più diversi. In questo volume si raccolgono i testi diffusi in stampe di poche carte che adottano il modello tradizionale del lamento in versi (erede del planctus religioso medievale) e che talvolta svolgono la funzione di una rudimentale cronaca in rima. Si vendevano a un costo bassissimo (un "bezzo", un "quattrino") ed erano destinate a un consumo essenzialmente popolare. In appendice due canzoni deploratorie di Pietro Aretino e di Girolamo Pandolfi da Casio.
