Ed egli stesso, infatti, accomunò i tre i film nella seguente classificazione: "Questi tre film trattano di una riduzione. Come in uno specchio: certezza conquistata; Luci d'inverno: certezza messa a nudo; Il silenzio (silenzio di Dio) la copia in negativo. Perciò formano una trilogia.3" Salvo poi auto-smentirsi successivamente: "Queste cose le scrissi nel 1963. Oggi penso che l'idea della trilogia non abbia né capo né coda. Era una Schnaps-Idee come dicono i bavaresi.4"
