Un professore fiorentino è legato da un'amicizia silenziosa e devota, ma appassionata, alla sua farmacista.Una notte la incontra per caso sulle scale di una casa malfamata dove abita un suo amico; il lunedì mattina la farmacia non riapre i battenti, restando poi a lungo chiusa. La dottoressa Greco è scomparsa. Il professore scopre che si è rifugiata ad Atene.Per starle più vicino si trasferisce a Creta, dedicandosi alla stesura della propria autobiografia. Il soggiorno cretese del professore è però segnato da una serie di eventi e di morti inquietanti, tra i quali un attentato a lui stesso. La farmacista, non sentendosi più sicura, rientra in Italia e, con lei, il professore. Si svolge, tra loro, un incontro drammatico nel quale la dottoressa Greco è costretta a rivelare la trama nascosta che lega insieme tutte quelle morti, e il suo ruolo nell'intera vicenda. In un loro ultimo incontro, la farmacista prospetta maliziosamente la possibilità di una lettura del tutto diversa dei crimini avvenuti
