Esta novela prehistórica ilustrada traslada a los lectores a una época lejana: 15.000 a. C., en plena Edad del Hielo. Lugar de acción: la región Franco-Cantábrica en el Suroeste de Europa. Nuestros antepasados nómadas sufren el clima adverso en el que les ha tocado vivir. Entre ellos destaca una familia. Aunque Veldor, el padre, cree en el poder de la Diosa Luna, acepta que los demás tengan otras creencias, "ya que no son menos importantes que las propias". Zanoa, la madre, dedica al espíritu del Bisonte las pinturas que 17.000 años más tarde serán descubiertas en la Cueva de Altamira. Velda, la hija de ambos, se convierte en la matriarca de un nuevo clan genético, "haplogrupo V", gracias a una mutación genética del ADN mitocondrial que solo las madres transmiten a sus hijos. Sus descendientes se dispersarán por Europa y el Noroeste de África, mezclándose tanto con los Bereberes en Túnez, como con los Sami en Laponia.
