Der West-östliche Divan wird als Ausdruck des ästhetischen und philosophischen Denkens der Weimarer Klassik verstanden. Versinnlichung und Vergeistigung, Realitätsflucht und Realitätskritik entsprechen dem klassischen Dualismus von objektiv-materieller und subjektiv-idealer Welt. Die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens wird durch geistige 'Verjüngung' in die Ewigkeit der Kunst überführt. Goethes ironische Symbolik läßt im Begrenzten das Unbegrenzte, im Wandelbaren das Ewige aufscheinen, aber im Unterschied zum kritisierten 'Propheten' nicht mit dem Anspruch auf litterale Faktizität, sondern als sich selbst offenbarender ästhetischer Schein. Individualität und Absolutheit, Relativität und Allgemeingültigkeit kommen so in ein klassisches Gleichgewicht. Alles Orientalische und Islamische dient als poetische Maske diesem Zweck.
