La campagna combattuta in Italia dal settembre 1943 al maggio 1945 tra l'esercito tedesco ed i suoi avversari angloamericani è stata tra le più dure della Seconda Guerra mondiale. L'invasione di quello che Churchill aveva definito il ventre molle dell'Euoropa si tramutò presto in un incubo, dimostrandosi molto più lunga, difficile e sanguinosa di quanto i comandi alleati avessero mai potuto prevedere.
Il maggior ostacolo all'invasione alleata fu il genio militare del Feldmaresciallo Albert Kesselring.
Kesselring fu il protagonista di una delle più grandi ritirate fatte combattendo negli annali della storia militare, un comandante che, di fronte a un nemico di gran volta superiore nel numero e nell'equipaggiamento, che aveva il dominio indiscusso del mare e dell'aria, senza poter contare su rinforzi di alcun genere, aveva opposta una resistenza ininterrotta, passo dopo passo, dalle coste meridionali della Sicilia sino alla valle del Po, in battaglie divenute leggendarie: Salerno, Cassino, Anzio e Nettuno, Rimini, la Linea Gotica.
Nel primo dei due tomi si analizzerà la formazione di Kesselring, il suo ruolo alla testa della Luftflotte 2 durante la Blitzkrieg in Polonia, nei Paesi Bassi, in Francia e durante la battaglia d'Inghilterra sino all'invasione dell'Unione Sovietica, il ruolo svolto come Oberbefehlshaber Süd sul Fronte mediterraneo, dalla battaglia dei convogli allo sbarco in Sicilia, e la prima parte della campagna d'Italia, da Salerno sino alle battaglie di Cassino.
Completano il presente lavoro più di cento fotografie, anche inedite, e una ricca cartografia.
