Vor langer, langer Zeit thronte oberhalb der Straße von Bad Langensalza nach Thamsbrück eine ansehnliche Klosteranlage, die Homburg. Auf den nahen Feldern wurde vor über 900 Jahren eine der großen Schlachten des Mittelalters geschlagen. Das Kloster Homburg wäre allenfalls für die Regionalgeschichte interessant, wenn nicht in alten Klosterurkunden wiederholt der Name einer Familie auftauchte, die in der unmittelbaren Umgebung des Klosters ihren Anfang genommen zu haben scheint. Ihre Nachfahren regierten noch bis 1918 zwei kleine Fürstentümer zwischen der oberen Saale und der Weißen Elster. Gemeint ist die Familie Heinrichs von Weida, eines Vorfahren des reußischen Fürstenhauses.
