Ahmed Hoosen Deedat was born in the year 1918 in western India. Driven by poverty and without any education, he left for his father in South Africa, who had been working there for nine years as a tailor. Through diligent study, the nine-year-old boy was not only able to overcome the language barrier, but also excelled at school. His fervent passion for reading books propelled him up the ranks, up to grade 8 of primary school. A lack of money forced him to drop out of school, and around the age of sixteen he took up the first of his many retail jobs. The most important of these jobs was the one he had in 1936, when he worked in a Muslim-owned shop, located near a Christian seminary, on the south coast of South Africa. The incessant insults the student missionaries hurled against Islam during their brief visits to the store, Is the Bible God's Word? inflamed a stubborn passion in young Ahmed to counter their false propaganda.
