Was versteht Tim O'Brien unter Imagination, und wo und auf welche Weise tritt sie in seinem Werk auf? Wodurch entsteht bei O'Brien diese Imagination, und welche sind ihre Wirkungen? Dies sind die Hauptfragen, mit denen sich diese Arbeit beschäftigt. Es soll dabei der Versuch unternommen werden, die Problematik werkübergreifend zu behandeln; eine Beschäftigung mit dem Gesamtwerk würde allerdings weit über den Rahmen dieser Arbeit hinausgehen. Deshalb wurden aus dem Oeuvre O'Briens folgende drei Texte ausgewählt, anhand derer sich dem von O'Brien als Imagination bezeichneten Themenkomplex genähert werden soll: „Going After Cacciato", „The Things They Carried" und „In the Lake of the Woods". Dazu wird gleichermaßen sowohl werkimmanent als auch biographisch vorgegangen.Bei der vorliegenden Arbeit handelt es sich um eine geringfügig abgeänderte Version der von Falco Pfalzgraf im Jahr 2000 am Fachbereich Anglistik / Amerikanistik der Universität Kassel eingereichten Staatsexamensarbeit.
